BRECHIN The Ancient City

Brechin's Flying Flea

"The Flying Flea" was built in Brechin and flown around the area of Findowrie Farm sometime in the 1930s.  The aeroplane was built from plans published by a French engineer named Henri Mignet who designed and built the original "Flying Flea".  I believe there were around 110 built in Britain and this is possibly the only one built in this area.

It was built by E. Small and A. D. Hardie in their garage at the Commercial, now the Northern Hotel, Brechin and I recall seeing it stored in the roof beams of the garage in 1942.

The registration number of the aeroplane was G-AXFL (CN.SHI).  It was removed to Scone (possibly Scone Aerodrome) where it remained until 1961.  It is unknown whether it is still intact or where it may be stored.

Another amateur aviator, Mr. Forrest, was said to have built an aeroplane which he flew, or attempted to fly, from a field in the area around Drumachlie Farm, Brechin although it is thought to have been a different type to the "Flying Flea" designed by Mignet.
